2010 Reserve Chardonnay
Sophistication
and poise are the two words that I think of most when enjoying this Russian
River Valley Chardonnay. The tones are understated and with careful
interpretation deliver a new level of appreciation sometimes not found in a
Californian Chard. There are bright notes of citrus floral, lemon
drop, lime soda and Key lime pie. The barrel toast gives just the right
amount of support while maintaining the effort of fine fruit as the front and
center focus. The palate is clean and refreshing. This isn’t a
robust and thick style of wine, with fat and fleshiness, but rather a delicate
approach with crisp acid. I think this is the very moment in the tasting
experience that sets this wine and wine style apart from many Californian
Chardonnays. This wine continues to drink as effortlessly on the second
glass as the first. The alcohol and back palate are managed and very
enjoyable. At the time of this critique, this wine has only been in
bottle less than a month but I am confident with cellaring, rounder and fuller
versions of what exist will emerge with great vivacity.
The
fruit for this wine comes from Sonoma’s Russian River Valley’s Bacigalupi
Vineyard. These exceedingly rare old
vines produced fruit for the wine that won the 1976 blind tasting in Paris
against French Chardonnays. Chateau
Montelena in the movie Bottle Shock
was telling the story about this lovely fruit.

2009 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
There
is a purity and richness to this bottling I absolutely love. The deep red
color is fantastic and is ever so inviting. This is the widest mélange of
fruit and character in the profound Beau Vigne lineup. This wine lives up
to its position of a Reserve. The nose begins as brooding of black fruit
but shortly builds to include lively mountain terroir. What is
“mountain terroir?” It is the racy and complex array of red fruit that
shows itself in higher elevations. In support of the fruit is warmth from
barrel vanillin, espresso ice cream and biscotti center. The notes of
confection on the nose are amazing. The palate drinks of youth with
absolute potential. Driven by dried herbs, forest and tobacco notes,
black berry and black stone fruit surface right through to the front of the
palate. The balance of this wine sits high. In its youth, it is
nervy and complex with a huge future ahead. The tannins of this mountain
based cabernet could use a decade to yield. The day that time comes,
there will be bliss. But for those who consume this wine at a young age,
you will definitely not be disappointed. Cellared well, this wine should
survive and drink well into its late teens or even twenties (+2028). 100%

2009 Juliet Cabert Sauvignon (SOLD OUT)
In looking for a
sophisticated, lively Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2009 Juliet is the end of the
search. This playful Cabernet really delivers it all and without
pretention. There is a great purity of fruit to this wine. It is
not earthy or gamey in any way. The nose lifts like clean velvet.
Notes of cassis, blackberry jelly jar, barrel vanillin and rose potpourri fills
the glass. As this wine opens up, more surreal notes of stones, tar and barrel
toast come through. The acid bounces from wall to wall in the mouth. This
is for certain not a one dimensional wine that only rests itself on the top of
the tongue. This wine is nothing short of a mouthful. A broad red
fruit profile takes over the focus with help from firm tannin and superb
structure. This wine is a joy to drink and should find itself in every
collector’s cellar. Stored correctly, this wine should survive 15 years
or longer from release. 81% Cabernet Sauvignon; 15% Merlot; 2% Petite Verdot; 2% Cabernet Franc;

2009 Cult Cabernet Sauvignon (SOLD OUT)
The
Cult is a brawny and flashy wine. Right at home in Beau Vigne’s stellar
group of offerings, this wine speaks to the hillsides from which it was
born. You can smell and taste the power of the mountains. It is a
wine woven together by the fruit of God and the hand of the winemaker.
There is a rotund core to the fruit in this wine. It possesses a center
that while somewhat tight and complex today will nicely fill out with time in
the bottle. The bright red fruit sits in the center of this wine like a
star surrounded by planets. There is no avoiding its presence and
pull. In addition to the deep fruit there are notes of French Oak
vanillin, cured meat, salty shores, and a touch of Christmas spice. The
palate plays on the tongue upon entry. Again, powerful and focused upon
the red fruit core; never allowed to escape the gravity of black cherry, soil
and stones of the terroir. I love the center and final delivery of
this wine. It carries for several seconds past a minute. An enjoyable
wine now with grilled or smoke meats, this wine will cellar well past 2025 or
longer. 96%

2009 Beau Vigne Persuasion
This is a delicate and pretty wine from
the start. The straw hues and honeysuckle wafts tempt the nose.
Further nuances of citrus, light, dry straw, pineapple fields and lemon
drops. The palate speaks of the Russian River with its Burgundian style
mouthfeel of yeast, French Oak caramels and striking acidity.

2009 Soda Canyon Cellars Barrel Chaser
The color of this wine instantly grabs you. It has a
wonderful, dark hue with a full expression of ripe black fruit, raspberry and
strawberry all melded into one. The nose is wonderfully lifted in the
front with an envelope of rhubarb, cola and even a touch of espresso
bean. Moments into the glass, there are hints of game, cured meats and
dried herbs. The palate explodes with savory flavors of dried currant,
plum, blackberry and hints of tobacco. The Chaser’s finish stretches with
many fine tannins driving from the center right through the end. This is
a delightful wine that seemingly, and enjoyably, changes with every sip.
It has the size to attract the most bullish of tasters while approachable to
the most novice of connoisseurs.

2009 Soda Canyon Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon
This is a very lively and somewhat boldly stated Napa
Cab. It has a wonderful aroma of rich black cherry, mocha, black
licorice, crushed herbs and rocky soil. It is a brooding arrangement of
Cabernet in its masculine form. The palate is thick and dense with more
of these aromas taking shape in the mouth. The licorice leaps quickly
into play, followed by the blackberry fruit, dried black stone fruits and
savory minerality. The tannins are firm but not too pushy. More
sincere black chocolate and mocha than pure tannic adrenaline. The
mouthfeel is filling and speaks in many ways to the terroir of where this wine
is from. It is a “young soul” Cab for certain.
